The evolution of accounting networks: information → social → blockchain → economic

Each network generation stuck because it extended a write permission to the edge — publish (information networks), connect (social networks), settle and issue (blockchain networks), mean (economic networks) — and paid by enclosing a register. The enclosed register is where the next generation happened.

The engine, in one strip:

Information (~1990s) Social (~2000s) Blockchain (~2010s) Economic (next)
Write permission pushed to the edge Publish: anyone can author a page the world can find Connect: anyone can author their social existence Settle & issue: self-custody, permissionless issuance Mean: anyone can author what value is — units, metrics, surplus
The enclosure (where the next generation happened) Discovery: relevance owned by the engine, sold back as advertising The graph's economic layer: semiotic write, economic read-only Meaning: one global record, one grammar Opened. Meaning was the last enclosure

Underneath, every network generation is an accounting generation. The link index is a citation ledger; the social graph is a multi-dimensional relational ledger, computing attention, reputation, and affinity in real time; the blockchain is one shared tamper-evident book; the economic network runs partitioned programmable ledgers, mirror accounting with no global record.

The social column is the existence proof: the social graph is multi-dimensional network accounting performed at planetary scale, daily. The semantic limit is therefore an authority arrangement, not a technical impossibility; the fourth column does not invent multi-dimensional value computation, it hands its write permission to the edge.

And the fourth column is a different kind of column. Google, Facebook, and Ethereum are operators or instances that own their layer's remaining enclosure. The fourth has no operator by construction: the grammar is shared, the spaces are sovereign, and what would have been the enclosure is the permission being distributed. Its canonical instance is a protocol and a confederation, not a company.
