The economic API

The economic API is the full set of economic verbs PSP exposes at the edge — define value, stake, issue credit, validate performance, govern — the interface through which agents compute with, and shape, the economic space itself, rather than merely use a system.

The form of the API follows the canonical form of the agent interface. Agents are textual: they do not need graphical interfaces and are most proficient where the interface is already text, which is why every current harness delivers functionality through the shell and the file system. What makes an agent is precisely this tooling, and the file system is itself a textual interface, so the economic API arrives the same way: economic semantics as files and commands, an agentic API. Richer surfaces are tailored on top, by whoever needs them: graphical interfaces for organizations that want them, pure hardware networks that want none, and existing programs wrapped to become economically aware without an economic interface of their own. The API provides the core economic semantics; the presentation layer is free.

Blockchains decentralized state replication, but not economic meaning: their shared ledger architecture treats all value as assets and all agency as transactions. Platforms gave us APIs for data and identity, but not for value coordination. The economic API provides what neither could: an API for composing economic protocols, a substrate for network-native economies, and a runtime where agency and utility are programmable.

Providing the full API at the edge means: * Reduced intermediation: agents coordinate complex actions directly, without relying on centralized platforms or bespoke smart contracts for every interaction type. * Enhanced composability: agents combine the core economic primitives to build novel instruments, organizations with embedded economic logic, and complex coordination mechanisms. * True decentralization of agency: power isn't just in validating transactions, but in defining value, structuring relationships, and participating in governance programmatically. * Native AI-agent integration: a clear interface for AI agents to participate as first-class economic actors within the network — the surface the economic harness speaks.

The economic API transforms network participation from using a system into actively computing with and shaping the economic space itself. It is the technical foundation for distributing economic intelligence and agency fully to the network edge.
